Gibran (Ramlawey) of Australia and New Zealand

His Eminence the Most Reverend Archbishop Gibran (Rimlawi) of Australia and New Zealand (September 14, 1931 – January 14, 1999) was the primate of the Antiochian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand from 1969-1999.

Timeline

• 1931 Sep 14 - Gibran Rimlawi born in Tripoli, Lebanon to Jacob and Farfoura.
• 1948 - Gibran graduates from St. Elias Orthodox College, and enters the monastic order under tutelage of Metropolitan Theodosius of Tripoli. Brother Gibran serves as his personal secretary until 1953.
• 1954 - Br. Gibran graduates from College of Three Hierarchs in Beirut, with diploma in psychology and philosophy.
• 1954 - Metropolitan Elia of Beirut ordains him a deacon on Pentecost. Dcn Gibran teaches Arabic, French, Literature and Ethics at St. Elias College.
• 1959 - Metrop. Elia ordains Dcn Gibran a priest. Fr Gibran continues to teach.
• 1962 - Fr Gibran receives graduate diploma in literature from St. Joseph University in Beirut.

Metropolitan Antony Bashir calls Fr Gibran to join the Syrian Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America; Fr Gibran serves at St. Nicholas Church in Montreal, Canada.

• 1963 - Archimandrite Gibran transferred to St. Mary's Church in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Archim. Gibran continues theological and academic studies.
• 1964 - Archim. Gibran receives Bachelor of Theology from Christ the Savior Seminary. He begins to teach Logic and Ethics.

Archim. Gibran also teaches French at Johnstown branch of University of Pittsburgh, and continues postgraduate work at Duquesne University. He also serves as president of Council of Orthodox Clergy of Greater Johnstown.

• 1966 - Archim. Gibran assigned to St. George Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
• 1967 - Archim. Gibran completes coursework for Doctorate in Philosophy at Duquesne University.
• 1968-69 - Archim. Gibran teaches philosophy at John Carroll University.
• 1969 Apr - Archim. Gibran elected president of Greater Cleveland Council of Orthodox Clergy.
• 1969 Oct 17 - Archim. Gibran elected Bishop of Australia, New Zealand and Dependencies.
• 1969 Oct 22 - Archim. Gibran notified about election. American archdiocese asked to consecrate him. Bishop (later Archbishop) Gibran ruling bishop for the next 30 years.
• 1999 Jan 14 - Archbishop Gibran reposes of a cardial infarction. Buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
