His Eminence Tikhon III (Voinov) of Kazan was the Metropolitan of the Eparchy of Kazan of the Church of Russia from 1699 to 1724. It was during his episcopate that the Slavonic-Latin School, forerunner of the Kazan Theological Academy/Seminary, in Kazan was founded.

Life

Timofey Vasilievich Voinov was born on February 21, 1655 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. He joined the Annunciation Monastery in Nizhny Novgorod, and on April 8, 1677, he was tonsured a monk with the name Tikhon. He was soon ordained a hierodeacon. On July 3, 1679, the future Patriarch Adrian took Dcn. Tikhon with him to Moscow where he was appointed to the post of sacristan while Adrian was at the Chudov Monastery of Moscow. On February 20, 1692, Dcn. Tikhon was ordained to the priesthood as a hieromonk.

Later that year Fr. Tikhon was raised to the dignity of archimandrite of Novospassky (New Savior) Monastery in Moscow. On February 20, 1692, Archim. Tikhon was elected to the episcopate and consecrated Metropolitan of Sarsk and Podonsk. On March 21, 1699, Metr. Tikhon was transferred to Kazan as successor to Metr. Markell who had died during the latter part of the previous year. Late in his episcopate, the Slavonic - Latin school was founded at the Bishop’s House in Kazan in 1723. The Slavonic - Latin school would become the Kazan Theological Seminary in 1732 and, after several "false" starts, the Kazan Theological Academy in 1842.

Metr. Tikhon reposed on March 23, 1724.
