Welcome to OrthodoxWiki!

Hello, MariaCrabtree, and welcome to OrthodoxWiki!

Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Please note that OrthodoxWiki is always in development, so not everything works quite right yet. You can help, though!

OrthodoxWiki is a community-edited encyclopedia of Orthodox Christianity. Articles are created and edited by our members, and so everything that we do here is subject to review and revision. The result is a true consensus product, with every interested editor contributing his own knowledge and writing skills. As such, when you feel that criticism of an article is warranted, we encourage you to join in and fix it! Don't worry about breaking anything or doing something wrong—the other editors here are happy to jump in and help you learn.

Mary of Bethany

Would you mind posting which version of Scripture and what source for the hymns you used to create the Mary of Bethany page? —magda (talk) 11:12, 6 Aug 2005 (EDT)

No problem. Just to let you know it was the scripture is the New King James Version. For the Hymns I got the Kontakion and Apolytikion from goarch.org. The troparia I got from comeandseeicons.com. Where should this information go?--Arlie 13:39, 6 Aug 2005 (EDT)

You might look at the article on Mary Magdalene for an example. Also, if you respond to another user on that user's talk page rather than your own, whenever that user logs in, he can immediately know there are messages. —magda (talk) 14:42, 6 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Ordination and images

Re: Ordination

It seems to me that having two separate articles for Ordination and Holy Orders would end up being redundant, unless Ordination is primarily about the actual rites and Holy Orders about the vocation.

The section in Template:Spirituality is for specific Mysteriological rites, that is, for sacramental services. So, Ordination would be the appropriate inclusion there. Working Holy Orders in elsewhere might be good, though.

Re: Image licenses

To see what images you've uploaded take a look at the "User contributions" link which should be available somewhere on your userpage (in the default skin, it's off to the left). You can also look at Special:Imagelist and see a complete list of all images uploaded to the wiki, starting with the most recent.

You add tags to images by looking at the image article itself (e.g., Image:Arlie1.jpg) and editing it. See Help:Image licenses for the list of tags available.

Assume all text or images are copyrighted unless you have specific, express permission from the copyright holder, because that's pretty much how the law looks at it. So, if you didn't write it or didn't create the image, you can be pretty sure that someone else owns it. Public domain text and images must be either explicitly released into the public domain by the copyright holder or be over 50 years of age. (There are also other licences under which material may be released, such as the GFDL or the CC licences. See Help:Image licenses for details.)

Merging, etc.

Arlie, I was thinking just a cut and paste job to include the material from both articles (Trisagion and Trisagion Prayers). The article which had the material cut would then redirect to the other (the only text would be: #REDIRECT article name). There's probably an easier way I don't know about.

Please take a moment or two to read through the Style Manual. It's also helpful to search for a page before creating a new one. I find a few pages especially useful for creating internal links: Apostles has a list of all the apostles so we can standardize spelling; Holy Scripture has a list of the books of the Bible. Two other things to remember: add categories to the articles you create (I seem to always forget this myself), and only the first mention in an article gets an internal link. (See my changes on Major orders to see what I mean.) For talk pages, I find it useful to provide links back to the pages you're referring to, so it's easy for the person you're messaging to follow along.

I am happy to see that you are so enthusiastic about contributing to Orthodoxwiki. I hope these pointers will help make things easier for you. If you have any to share, please let me know. Humbly yours, —magda (talk) 11:52, 9 Aug 2005 (EDT)

If you include other marks in an internal link, the wiki software will assume that you mean they're a part of the article title. I took out the intensifying from Trisagion Prayers so that it redirects correctly. I also find that previewing before I save is less stressful than finding all the mistakes I made after I save. —magda (talk) 12:37, 9 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Citations

Arlie, it seems to me that you are quoting from some source for the angel articles. What source or sources are you using? —magda (talk) 14:25, 9 Aug 2005 (EDT)

It would be helpful if you put a link to online sources, or the name of the publication, for the sources of your articles. —magda (talk) 11:47, 11 Aug 2005 (EDT)

It is important to know where information comes from. Please link to your online sources. —magda (talk) 16:12, 17 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Note on templates

To include a template in an article, all you need do is put its name in double curly-brackets: . So, to include Template:Orthodoxyinamerica in an article, you'd put this in it:
orthodoxyinamerica

Hope this helps! —Dcn. Andrew talk random contribs 19:44, 9 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Formatting

When you want things to have indented line breaks, add a colon to the front of the line. (See Transfiguration for an example, and Help:Editing#The wiki markup for more reference.) —magda (talk) 13:39, 11 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Copyright & fair use

A lot of the material you're adding seems to be from outside sources. I'm concerned that we may not have explicit permission to use this material. Since it's not being excerpted in these entries as part of a larger article, it doesn't qualify for the legal definition of fair use.

So, the upshot is that if whole sections are going to be used from outside sources, we need to have explicit permission to use the material on OrthodoxWiki. If we don't have explicit permission, then we can excerpt material, provided that it is clearly labelled as quotations, properly cited and sourced, and within the context of a larger article about the subject.

See OrthodoxWiki:Copyrights. —Dcn. Andrew talk random contribs 16:21, 17 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Accept Revised?

Dear Maria,

There's been a request to use some of your edited content on Wikipedia. Would you mind putting the Acceptrevised template on your user page to clarify the copyright (you can add it like this: acceptrevised? That would be very helpful! Thanks, — FrJohn (talk) 08:52, April 25, 2007 (PDT)
