Chrysostomos (Tsiter) of Austria

His Eminence Chrysostomos (Tsiter) of Austria was the first Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Central Europe under the jurisdiction of the Church of Constantinople. He led the metropolis from 1963 to 1991.

Life

Metr. Chrysostomos was born on November 11, 1903 in Triglia in Asia Minor. He is the nephew of St. Chrysostomos of Smyrna. He received his theological education at the Theological School of Halki and at the University of Athens from which he earned his doctorate in 1924. He taught at a high school in Athens before he entered an ecclesiastical career.

On November 6, 1963, Metr. Chrysostomos was elected to the episcopate by the Holy Synod of the Church of Constantinople as the first metropolitan of the Metropolis of Austria and Exarch of Italy, Switzerland and Hungary, a metropolis that had been established by the Holy Synod on February 17, 1963. Through his efforts, the Metropolis of Austria was recognized as a public corporation by the Austrian government with the publication of Federal Law 229 of June 23, 1967.

In 1991, Metr. Chrysostomos retired as the ruling hierarch and was succeeded by Michael (Staikos) as metropolitan. Metr, Chrysostomos reposed on February 2, 1995 in Vienna, Austria at an advance age.
