Orthodox Christianity in South Africa has been organised as a diocese since 1927, and today includes parishes of several nationalities and languages. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa has two dioceses in the country.[1][2]

Church of Alexandria

  • Archdiocese of Johannesburg and Pretoria – founded in 1927 as the Metropolis of Johannesburg and Southern Africa. It covers the former Transvaal province, and has Greek, Russian, Serbian and Romanian-speaking parishes as well as parishes that use English, Afrikaans and other local languages.[1] Its first monastery, the Monastery of Ss Nektarius and Nicholas, was founded in 2005.[1]
  • Archdiocese of the Cape of Good Hope – formed in 1968 from the Metropolis of Johannesburg. It covers the rest of South Africa, including the Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, together with Namibia, Eswatini and Lesotho.[2]

Parishes include the Church of St. Nicholas of Japan in Brixton, Johannesburg, founded in 1987 as an English-speaking mission open to South Africans of any background.[3]

Other Orthodox churches

Since 2022 some South African parishes have belonged to the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, which the Church of Russia set up in 2021 in territory that the Church of Alexandria regards as its own.[4]
