Our father among the saints Peter the Wonderworker of Argos took upon himself a spiritual struggle of silence before finally accepting the entreaties of the people of Argos to become their bishop in the late ninth and early tenth century. He is commemorated by the Church on May 3.

Life

St Peter was born in Constantinople in 855. St Peter died at the age of 70 and was buried in Argos. Five hundred years later the Venetians and the Franks raided Argos and Greece and took away the saint's relics.

Since the early 1990s Argos churchmen have been trying to locate the relics. They were eventually found in a monastery chapel near Rome. On January 19, 2008 the relics were ceremoniously returned by Vatican clerics to the Cathedral of Argos.
