His All-Holiness Jeremias I of Constantinople, Greek: Ιερεμίας Α, was Patriarch of Constantinople from 1522 and 1546. HIs patriarchate was interrupted by the uncanonical intrusion of Joannicus I into the see of Constantinople during 1524 and 1525.

Life

Patriarch Jeremias was a native of Zitsa in Epirus. The details of his early life are unknown. HIs education was limited, but he excelled in management. He became Archbishop of Sofia about the year 1513, if not earlier.

He was elected to the cathedra of Constantinople on December 31, 1522. After his installation Patr. Jeremias began a round of visits to Cyprus, Egypt, Sinai and Palestine. In the Spring of 1524, a group of clergy and notables of Constantinople deposed him and elected in his place Joannicius the Metropolitan of Sozopolis. Upon receiving the news of his deposition, Patr. Jeremias called, in Jerusalem, a synod with the patriarchs of Jerusalem, Antioch, and Alexandria that excommunicated Joannicius. Upon Patr. Jeremias' return from Jerusalem, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificant ordered him to be re-installed as patriarch. This took place in Constantinople on September 24, 1525.

In 1537, Patr. Jeremias obtained from the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent an order to stop the conversion of churches into mosques in Constantinople. However, after Suleiman's death in 1566 this decision was not continued by his successors.

Patr. Jeremias died on January 13, 1546 in the town of Vratsa, in today's Bulgaria, while traveling to Wallachia.
