His Eminence Jeremiah (Fountas) of Gortyna and Megalopolis is the metropolitan of the Metropolis of Gortyna and Megalopolis. The metropolis is located in the Arcadian area of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. He has been the Metropolitan of Gortyna and Megalopolis since 2006.

Life

Metr. Jeremiah (Fountas) was born in 1941 in the town of Nafpaktos on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth in western Greece. He graduated from the school of theology in 1964. He entered the Holy Orders in 1969 when he was ordained a deacon. He was ordained a priest in 1972. Father Jeremiah served in a number of metropolises and the Archdiocese of Athens. In 2000, he received a doctorate degree in theology. In 2003, Fr. Jeremiah was appointed Assistant Professor of the Department of Social Theology of the University of Athens. He is proficient in the German, English, French, Italian, and Hebrew languages.

In 2006, Fr. Jeremiah was elected to the episcopate and was consecrated Metropolitan of Gortyna and Megalopolis on October 14, 2006.
