Fr. Michael Potochny was the first permanent priest that was assigned to Church of the Three Hierarchs in Streator, Illinois. This assignment began in 1905, although Fr. Michael had previously been choirmaster of the parish dating back to at least 1895, when Fr. Ambrose Vretta had been priest. During his tenure as priest of the Church of the Three Hierarchs, he helped establish the Holy Dormition of the Theotokos Catholicon parish in Benld, Illinois.

Fr. Michael was originally from Austria-Hungary and immigrated to the United States around 1880. Prior to his time in Streator, Fr. Michael served as choirmaster at St. Mary's Church in Minneapolis during the tenure of Fr. Alexis Toth. Previous to that, he had lived in Montana, which is where at least three of his children were born.
