Alexey Godyaew

The mitred archpriest Alexey Gavrilovitch Godyaew was an Orthodox priest who established the first Russian Orthodox churches in New Zealand in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in the 1950s.

Life

Fr. Alexey was born on February 8, 1900 in Bolshaya Utcha, Russia to Gavriil and Antonina Godyaew. He married Anna Muhlen in Paris in 1930.

He travelled extensively pastoring the new parishes until his retirement.

Fr. Alexey died at home on March 19, 1991 and was buried at Waikanae Cemetery.
