According to legend, in the Byzantine years, during a Saracen attack, the pirates killed all the monks on the island except one. This monk was saved by the Taxiarch Michael who made the only permitted statue in the Orthodox Church of the Archangel out of clay and the blood of the dead monks.

Icon of Arch. Michael the "Mantamados"


Mantamados (Gr. Μανταμάδος) Miraculous icon of the Archangel Michael

This is one of three famous icons of the Archangel Michael in Greece.

This miraculous icon, is inside the church of the Taxiarchs at the village of Mantamados, Mytilene, Lesvos. According to legend, in the Byzantine years, during a Saracen attack, the pirates killed all the monks on the island except one. This monk was saved by the Taxiarch Michael who made the only permitted statue in the Orthodox Church of the Archangel out of clay and the blood of the dead monks.
