On [[August 19]], 1916, [[Archimandrite]] Philip was [[consecration of a bishop|consecrated]] Bishop of Alaska, succeeding Bp. [[Alexander (Nemolovsky) of Brussels|Alexander]] who had been transferred to Winnipeg, Canada as Bishop of Canada. Bp. Archbishop [[Evdokim (Meschersky) of the Aleutians|Evdokim]], Bp. Alexander, and Metropolitan German of Selevkiyslaj officiated at Bp. Philip's consecration.
In IIn 1917, Bp. Philip was transferred back returned to Russia as "on vacation" <ref>''Orthodox America 1794-1976 Development of the Orthodox Church in America'', C. J. Tarasar, Gen. Ed. 1975, The Orthodox Church in America, Syosset, New York, Appendix III, p347</ref>, but did not return to the United States. Subsequently, he became Bishop of Smolensk.
