Amvrosy II (Protasov) of Kazan

His Eminence Archbishop Amvrosy II (Protasov) of Kazan was the Archbishop of the Eparchy of Kazan of the Church of Russia from 1816 to 1826.

Life

Born Alexei Ivanovich Protasov in 1762, he received the name Amvrossy when he was tonsured a monk. Archbishop Amvrossy served as rector of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and led the sees of the Dioceses of Kazan and Tver. He was a writer, having written a "Latin Grammar" for theological schools as well as having published a collection of homilies.

While he was the ruling hierarch of Kazan, Abp. Amvrosy opened the Kazan branch of the Russian Bible Society that translated the Scriptures into the local languages, thus supporting the missionary efforts of the eparchy.

Abp. Amvrosy reposed in 1841.
