Panteleimon (Chrysofakis) of Thessalonica

His Eminence Panteleimon (Chrysofakis) of Thessalonica was the Metropolitan of Thessalonica that is under the jurisdiction of the Church of Constantinople but administered, under agreement with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, by the Church of Greece. Metr. Panteleimon led the New Lands Metropolis of Thessalonica from 1974 to 2003.

Life

Nicholas Chrysophakis was born in 1925 in Athens, Greece. His education in theology included postgraduate studies at the Roman Catholic Institute in Paris, France and at the University of Sorbonne. Entering the Holy Orders, he was ordained a deacon in 1950, receiving the name Panteleimon, and a priest in 1951.

In 1965, Father Panteleimon was elected to the episcopate by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece and was consecrated Bishop of the Metropolis of Samos and Ikaria. In 1974, he was transferred to the see of the Metropolis of Thessalonica as Metropolitan of Thessalonica.

He was the writer of many books. In 1996, the Department of Theology of the University of Thessalonica awarded him an honorary Doctor's degree. Metr. Panteleimon reposed on July 9, 2003.
