Re: Publishing article

Robert,

Sorry for my delay. I do see the article. It's a very good and interesting topic, and I am glad to see it on the wiki.

One concern I have is whether the images are indeed usable under our license - content needs to be freely redistributable, which means either public domain or explicit permission to publish with the GFDL/Creative Commons licenses. They look like illustrations from the book?

Other than that, as long as content is original, or properly credited if it falls under "Fair Use," you can simply publish this yourself. A new page can be created just by browsing to an empty URL, for example: Nuns of Shamordino.

Thank you, — FrJohn (talk) 06:44, August 17, 2016 (UTC)

Thank you Father John. I hold the copyright to the icon. I commissioned a local iconographer in Ottawa to make it. As far as I know there is no other icon of the Nuns of Sharmordino. So, I do not want to give up copyright on the icon, but I do want to allow the limited sharing of a "fair use" kind with these low quality images which I have kept generally to a 300 pixel size so that it is not suitable for making copies for sale but one can still enjoy the encouragement and edifying story portrayed in the icon. Please let me know if that clears it for public display on Orthodox Wiki. Thanks. Robert.
Hi Robert. Thanks. By posting the image on OrthodoxWiki, you are permitting distribution under the terms of both the GFDL and Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 licenses. See OrthodoxWiki:Copyrights for details and links. What this means is basically you are allowing reuse and modification of your photograph (with attribution). This can be a low res image if that is what you are comfortable with, and the license grant is limited to the actual image posted.
As I understand it, the fact that you commissioned the icon does not mean that you hold the copyright to the icon itself. Contracted works are not "Work for hire" under US law and there would need to be an explicit assignment of copyright by the author of the work. Purchasing a physical copy does not automatically give you all rights. However, it does give you some rights, and I don't anticipate any problem posting a photo of the image, particularly one that is not high resolution—I have in mind for example |this article from the Art Law Journal.
I was more concerned with where the illustrations come from though -- are they from a published work?
