Turns out that hitcounters were [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T120216 removed]] from core in MW 1.26, so I've moved the site back to 1.25 and added the [[mw:Extension:HitCounters|HitCounter extension]], so we should be ok moving forward. Let me see what I can do about recovering those edits.
