Before his consecration, Archimandrite Theophylactos was the parish priest of the Greek Orthodox church in Melbourne. He was elected to Metropolitan on [[April 22]], 1947.
His reign was tragically cut short, however, by a car crash on [[August 2]], 1958. To date, he is the only Greek Orthodox [[bishop ]] to be buried in Australasia.
