Our Righteous Father Ephrem the Syrian was a prolific Syriac language hymn writer, monk and theologian of the 4th century. He is venerated by Christians throughout the world, but especially among Syriac Christians, as a saint. His feast day in the Orthodox Church is January 28.
The most well known of the writings attributed to him is the Prayer of Saint Ephrem that is a part of most days of Great Lent:take from me the spirit of sloth,
meddling, lust of power, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity,
humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.
Yea, O Lord and King,
grant me to see my own sins and not to judge my brother,
for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.
O God, be gracious to me, a sinner.
