It's most often spelled protosyngellos in English sources I've seen, probably because that's roughly how it's pronounced. (That's the spelling used, for instance, in the Antiochian Archdiocese of N.A.) In any event, it's neither English nor Greek, but rather a Latinization of a modern Greek pronunciation of a Byzantine Greek word.
In any event, after a brief Google check, limiting only to English sources, protosyngellos and protosynkellos are pretty much neck-and-neck with only about two dozen sources for each. I'm not terribly attached to either one. —Fr. Andrew talk contribs 10:03, March 13, 2007 (PDT)
