The community was founded in 1995 by six monks along with Elder Ephraim, former abbot of Philotheou on [[Mount Athos|Mt Athos]], under the auspices of His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta. In time it has grown to approximately 35 monks, and has continued to grow, providing the training grounds for the monks of other Greek Orthodox monasteries in America.
