His Eminence the Most Reverend Procopius IΙ (Oikonomidis) of Athens was the Metropolitan of Athens of the Church of Greece from 1896 to 1901.

Life

Born Procopius Oikonomidis, in 1837, in village of Doumena near municipality of Kalavryta in Achaia, Greece which is situated in the northernmost region of the Peloponnese. Little is known of his life before he entered the university.

He studied Philosophy and Theology at the University of Athens and then furthered his education in Moscow, Geneva, and Heidelberg. He then entered the Holy Orders. After completing his education, Procopius taught at the Theological School of the University of Athens. It was during that time that he entered the Holy Orders.

In 1884, he was appointed Secretary General of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, a post he held until October 11, 1896, when he was elected Metropolitan of Athens and all Greece.

Metr. Procopius resigned in November 1901 in the wake of the Evangelical events concerning translation of the Holy Scripture into modern Greek and withdrew to the Monastery of Faneromeni in the municipality of Salamina on Salamis Island.

Procopius II reposed in Athens on July 4, 1902.
