Porfyrios of Neapolis
His Eminence Porphyrios (Mahairiotis) of Neapolis is the titular Bishop of Neapolis, assistant bishop to His Beatitude Chrysostomos II of Nea Justiniana and All Cyprus and head of the Representation of the Church of Cyprus to the European Union.
His Grace Porfyrios was born on April 16, 1966 in the village of Pera Orinis in Nicosia, Cyprus. He attended the "National Martyr Kyprianos" Lyceum in Strovolos, graduating in 1984. Following his graduation, Porfyrios served his military obligation in the Cypriot National Guard until September 1986.
Upon his release from the National Guard, he entered the Archaeology Department of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Athens, from which he graduated in 1990. Following his graduation from the University of Athens, Porfyrios continued his studies at the Theological Faculty of the University of Thessalonica. After graduating in 1994, he returned to Cyprus to teach at the Apostle Barnabas Seminary.
In September 1995, Porfyrios joined the brotherhood of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) of Machairas. On August 15, 1998, he was ordained deacon by Bishop Vasilios of Constantia. In February 1999, following the election of the abbot of the Machairas Monastery, Athanasios, as Bishop of Limassol, Dn. Porfyrios joined Metr. Athanasios in his administration. In April 1999, Bp. Anthanasios ordained Dn. Porfyrios to the priesthood. In March 2000, he was raised to the dignity of archimandrite, and then in December 2001, Metr. Athanasios conferred the dignity of Confessor on Archim. Porfyrios.
While serving in the Bishopric of Limassol, Archim. Porfyrios served as priest of the churches of Pano Platres and Kato Amiantos, and the parish of Agios Nectarios. He also served as confessor in gymnasiums (high schools) and lyceums of Limassol. In addition to his priestly duties, Archim. Porfyrios served as vice chairman of the Solomontos Panayidi Foundation from 2000 to 2006. Between 2004 and 2007 he also was chairman of the Center of Environmental Research and Education in Cyprus, of which he was a founding member. He also served in the office of the Monuments and Valuable Articles of the Limassol Bishopric.
On October 5, 2007, the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, following the recommendation of Archbishop Chrysostomos II, Archim. Porfyrios was elected Assistant Bishop with the title of Bishop of Neapolis. He was consecrated on October 27, 2007.
Bp. Porfyrios is the representative of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus to the European Union.
