His Grace, '''Peter (Arihara) of Yokohoma''' was the Bishop of Yokohama, Vicar of the [[Diocese]] of Tokyo, of the [[Church of Japan]] late in the last decade of the twentieth century. Elected the successor to Metropolitan [[Theodosius (Nagashima) of Japan]] in March 2000, he suddenly fell gravely ill and resigned his election before his [[enthronement]].

==Life==
The future Bishop Peter received his theological education at [[St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary (Crestwood, New York)|St. Vladimir's Theological Seminary]] in New York. He graduated in 1958. After his [[ordination]] into the [[Holy Orders]], Father Peter was [[tonsure]]d a [[monk]], and served within Japan.  

After the death of Metr. Theodosius on [[May 9]], 1999, the Church of Japan made a number of clerical moves toward the election of his successor. On [[September 6]], 1999, Fr. Peter was elevated to the dignity of [[archimandrite]] in the [[Dormition Cathedral (Moscow Kremlin)|Dormition Cathedral]] of the Moscow Kremlin. 

On [[October 9]], 1999, Archim. Peter was [[consecration of a bishop|consecrated]] Bishop of Yokohama, Vicar of the Diocese of Tokyo, while Frs. Daniel (Nushiro) and Seraphim (Tsujie) were consecrated as Bishops of Kyoto and Sendai respectively. In March 2000, Archim. Peter was elected by an extraordinary Local Council of the Church of Japan as [[metropolitan]] of Japan. Shortly after his election Metropolitan-elect Peter became gravely ill and resigned the election. With his resignation, the Local Council re-convened and on [[May 6]], 2000, elected Bishop [[Daniel (Nushiro) of Japan|Daniel (Nushiro)]] of Kyoto as metropolitan. Metr. Daniel was enthroned on [[May 14]], 2000, three days after the repose of Bp. Peter on [[May 11]], 2000.
