Life
Little is known of the life of Patr. Nicholas. Before his becoming patriarch, Nicholas had been the representative of the Sultan of Egypt in Constantinople. After his election as patriarch of Alexandria in 1263, Nicholas remained resident in Constantinople where he became involved in the dispute between Patr. Arsenius of Constantinople and emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos over Michael's having had the young emperor John IV Lascaris blinded. He was also present during the Synod of 1266 in Constantinople that excommunicated Patr. Arsenius.
