Little is known of the life of Patriarch Michael II. Before he was appointed to the [[see]] of Alexandria he had been [[Bishop]] of Maioumas with the name John. When Eastern Roman emperor Basil I the Macedonian named him to the Alexandrian see in 870, his name was changed to Michael, in honor of his predecessor, Michael I.
It was during his term as patriarch of Alexandria that, in 889, repairs were completed of the Patriarchal [[Monastery of St. [[Savvas the Sanctified]](Alexandria, Egypt)|Monastery of St. Savvas]] in Alexandria that had been damaged during Arab attacks earlier in the ninth century.
After his death in 903, the [[cathedra]] of the Church of Alexandria remained vacant until 907.
