==Life==
The future Metropolitan Makarios was born in 1961 in the village of Dafnes in the prefecture of Heraklion, Crete. He received his basic education, including his initial collegiate studies, in Heraklion, earning a degree in Byzantine Music Studies. He continued his education at the Theological Schools of the Universities of Belgrade and [[Thessalonica]], receiving, in 1985, a degree with "Highest Distinction". He continued his graduate studies at Sorbonne University in Paris, earning a Master of Theology degree.
Metr. Makarios began his ecclesiastical career with his [[tonsure]] as a [[reader]] by [[Archbishop]] Eugene (Psalidakis) of Crete. In 1985, he was tonsured a [[monk]] at the Monastery of Panagia Agkarathos by Abp. Timothy (Papoutsakis) of Crete, receiving the name Makarios. Later in 1985, Mk. Makarios was [[ordination|ordained]] a [[deacon]], followed in 1987 by his ordination as a [[priest]], again, by Abp. Timothy. In 1992, Fr. Makarios was raised to the dignity of "[[Archimandrite]] of the Ecumenical Throne" by Patriarch [[Bartholomew I (Archontonis) of Constantinople|Bartholomew]].
