Archimandrite Lazarus (Moore) was a priestmonk who served in Palestine, Transjordan, India, Greece, Australia, California and Alaska.

Biographical timeline

  • 1902: Born in England.
  • Moved to Alberta, Canada in early adulthood. Worked as farm labourer for several years.
  • Sensed a call to become a missionary. Went to English missionary college for five years.
  • Became Orthodox.
  • 1934: Spent seven weeks on Mt Athos, then lived as a monk in Yugoslavia.
  • Fr Lazarus was ordained to the priesthood by Abp Feofan (ROCOR). Sent to Palestine to serve the Russian Mission in Jerusalem.
  • 1948: Israel, newly-founded, gave the Mission's property to the Soviet Union, which left the Russian Mission, which was under ROCOR, dispossessed. Hmk Lazarus served as priest to the Russian Convent in Aïn Karim and Transjordan
  • 1952: Sent to India, where he helped in Orthodox missionary work for twenty years. Many books and translations were published during this time. Whilst there, so as not to offend, he wore a white cassock rather than a black.
  • Met Mother Gabrielia in India. She was consulted in Hmk Lazarus' translations of the Fathers and of the Psalter.
  • 1959: By this time, Fr Lazarus is an archimandrite.
  • 1972: Archim. Lazarus called to Greece.
  • 1974: Archim. Lazarus called to Australia, serving for nine years.
  • 1983: Fr Peter Gillquist asked Archim. Lazarus to move to California to assist the former Evangelical Orthodox Church in their move to Orthodoxy.
  • 1989: Continued this work in Alaska
  • 1992 Nov 27: Reposed in Eagle River, Alaska, from cancer.
