His Eminence Kyrillos I (Karmpaliotis) of Thessaliotis and Fanariofersala was the metropolitan of the Metropolis of Thessaliotis and Fanariofersala under the jurisdiction of the Church of Greece. The metropolis is located in Thessaly in central Greece. Metr. Kyrillos was metropolitan from 1951 to 1967.

Life

George Karmpaliotis was born in 1901 in Kalamata, in the southern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. He entered the Monastery of St. Paul at Mount Athos from high school and was tonsured a monk, receiving the name Kyrillos. He then enrolled in the Theological School of the University of Athens and also attended courses at its Philosophical Faculty. Additionally, he had entered the Holy Orders.

After his graduation, he was appointed Chancellor of the Metropolis of Thessaliotis and Fanariofersala, a position he held until the year 1933 when he was transferred to a position as preacher in Metropolis of Messenia. In 1934, Father Kyrillos was transferred to the Military Academy where he remained until 1942.

In 1942, Fr. Kyrillos was elected to the episcopate as the Bishop of Paramythia. However, the activities of World War II prevented him from assuming the cathedra. In 1943, Bp. Kyrillos was transferred to the Metropolis of Zihni. On September 25, 1951, Bp. Kyrillos was enthroned as the Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Thessaliotis and Fanariofersala succeeding the late Bishop Ezekiel.

Metr. Kyrillos was active developing the pastoral and missionary work within the metropolis and, in particular, guiding the recovery efforts following the devastating earthquake of 1954 that caused major damage in Karditsa and the wider region. He was active within the literary life of the metropolis and was a Fellow of the Historical and Folklore Company of Thessalians and the Popular Library of Karditsa.
