Joachim (Neradjoulis) of Chalcedon
His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Joachim (Neradjoulis) of Nicomedia is the incumbent of the Senior See of Nicomedia and Exarch of All Bithynia of the Church of Constantinople. Metr. Joachim was the previous Elder Metropolitan of Chalcedon.
Life
Metr. Joachim was born in Constantinople. He attended the Theological School of Halki, graduating in 1966. After receiving the name Joachim upon his monastic tonsure, he was ordained deacon and served in the Patriarchal Court as Deacon "in Line". Later he served as the Second Patriarchal Deacon until his election as Auxiliary Bishop of Melitene in 1973.
He was appointed Grand Chancellor of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on March 25, 1974 and served in this capacity for eighteen years. During his tenure in the Grand Chancellery of the Patriarchate, he served as Patriarchal Locum Tenens during the absence of the Ecumenical Patriarch. Expressing his organizational abilities, he contributed greatly to the renovation of the Patriarchal offices and library. In 1990, he accompanied Patriarch Dimitrios on his visit to the United States.
On September 21, 1996, Metr. Joachim presided at the enthronement ceremonies for His Eminence, Archbishop Spyridon (Papageorge) as primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City.
On December 10, 1991, the Holy Synod of the Church of Constantinople elected him Metropolitan of the Senior See of Chalcedon.
On February 6, 2002, Metr. Joachim suffered a stroke at his residence in Chalcedon, Istanbul, Turkey. He was taken to the American Hospital in Istanbul for treatment.
