In December 2008, Hegumen Irenee retired from his full-time secular employment at a hospital in Montreal. On [[April 2]], 2009, the [[Holy Synod]] of the OCA elevated Hegumen Irenee to the dignity of archimandrite and elected him to be an auxiliary bishop for Abp. Seraphim with the title of Bishop of Quebec City.
On [[October 1]], 2009 ten bishops participated in the episcopal consecration of Archimandrite Irénée at Annunciation Cathedral.
