Great Lent is the period of preparation leading up to Pascha. Before Great Lent starts, Orthodox Christians prepare for it in turn with the Triodion, or three weeks preceding the start of Great Lent.

Following Meatfare Sunday, meats are removed from the diet. Following Cheesefare Sunday (also known as Forgiveness Sunday, dairy is removed, initiating the strict fasting of Great Lent.
