Emmanuel (Abo-Hatab) of Brooklyn
His Grace, the Right Reverend Emmanuel (Abo-Hatab) of Brooklyn was a bishop of the American Orthodox Catholic Church as Bishop of Montreal from 1927 to 1931 and of the Russian Metropolia as Bishop of Brooklyn from 1931 to his repose in 1933. Prior to his episcopal consecration, he served as the archdeacon of St. Raphael of Brooklyn.
Life
Born Rizkallah Abouhatab in 1890 in Damask.
He served as archdeacon to St. Raphael of Brooklyn during the first decades of the twentieth century and was subsequently ordained a priest.
On September 11, 1927, Fr. Emmanuel was consecrated Bishop of Montreal by Archbishop Aftimios (Ofiesh) and Bishops Theophilus (Pashkovsky) and Arseny (Chagovtsov) as vicar to Abp. Aftimios to administer the Syrian parishes in Canada under the American Orthodox Catholic Church.
In 1930, Emmanuel broke with Aftimios and rejoined the Russian Metropolia, taking Aftimios's previous episcopal see of Brooklyn at the appointment of Metropolitan Platon (Rozhdestvensky) of New York.
In addition to his efforts organizing the churches of the Syrian mission, Bp. Emmanuel was the editor of the mission publication Al Kalimat (now The Word Magazine).
Bp. Emmanuel reposed on May 29, 1933, and the remaining Syrian parishes under the Russians were released to the Church of Antioch. His body was later moved to the Antiochian Village in Ligonier, Pennsylvania where he is buried in the same grave as St. Raphael of Brooklyn.
