Life

The future patriarch was born Damianos Karivalis on the island of Chios on August 14, 1923. At the age of 15, he moved to Palestine, and there completed his education in 1943. He was tonsured a monk in March 1944 on the island of Chios with name Diodoros. On September 22, 1944 he was ordained a hierodeacon by Archbishop Basileos of Ascalon at the Tomb of the Savior in Jerusalem. On November 10, 1962, Fr. Diodoros was consecrated Archbishop of Hierapolis within the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. On February 3, 1981, he was elected Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine. He was enthroned on March 1, 1981 in the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem.

During his patriarchate, Patr, Diodoros strongly supported the traditionalists of the patriarchate. However, he negelected his Arab-speaking flock, causing others to undermine his reputation.

In later years, his health deteriorated due to diabetes. His infirmity advanced such that he was only able to attend church in a wheelchair. Patr.
