His Beatitude [[Patriarch]] '''Diodoros (Karivalis)''' (1923-2000) served as [[primate]] of the [[Church of Jerusalem]] from 1981 to 2000.
The future patriarch was born Damianos Karivalis on the island of Chios.  At the age of 15, he moved to Palestine, completing his education in 1943.  He was ordained a [[deacon]] in 1944 and took [[monastic]] vows the same year.  Diodoros was ordained to the [[priest|priesthood]] in 1947.
On [[November 10]], 1962, Diodoros was consecrated as Archbishop of Hierapolis within the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.  On [[February 3]], 1981, he was elected as Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine.
The patriarch died on [[December 19]], 2000, from complications related to diabetes.
