Chrysostomos II of Zakynthos
His Eminence the Most Reverend Chrysostomos II (Synetos) of Zakynthos was the Metropolitan of Zakynthos of the Metropolis of Zakynthos and Strofades, a metropolis under the jurisdiction of the Church of Greece from 1994 to 2011.
Life
Metropolitan Chrysostomos was born in 1939 in the Ionian Islands' city of Zakynthos in western Greece. His baptismal name was Demetrios. In 1959, he entered the Monastery of St. Catherine of Sinai, where he was tonsured a monk with the name Chrysostomos. In November 1961, Chrysostomos was ordained deacon, and in November 1962 he was ordained a priest.
Chrysostomos graduated from the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens. In 1972, he was assigned to the dependency of Monastery of Sinai at Ioannina in Epirus, Greece.
On August 16, 1976, Fr. Chrysostomos was consecrated the titular Bishop of Dodona. In August 1991, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece re-designated his position as a ruling bishop. On May 25, 1994, he was elected, by the Holy Synod, metropolitan of the see of Zakynthos. On June 9, 1992, Bp. Chrysostomos was reelected abbot by the brethren of the Monastery Pentelis.
On January 26, 1993, he was appointed to the position of Protocol and Public Relations for Archbishop Seraphim of Athens and All Greece. Also, he was named deputy of the Metropolis of Attica.
On May 25, 1994, Bp. Chrysostomos was elected Metropolitan of Zakynthos by the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church. As bishop of the place of his birth, Metr. Chrysostomos developed a rich and personal relationship in the social and charitable activities of his metropolis. Among these activities were his participation, on November 12, 2000, in the inauguration of a new wing of the Monastery of Strofades and St. Denis in the city of Zakynthos, which housed a museum, vestry, hostel, and maintenance workshops and, on August 22, 2003, in the four day summer celebration of St. Dionysius, during which the metropolis received a visit from Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, which brightened the festivities.
In 2011, Metr. Chrysostomos resigned as the metropolitan of the see of Zakynthos. He was elected as Metropolitan of the see of Dodona (Δωδώνης). He was succeeded by Metr. Dionysios (Sifnaios) as Dionysios IV who was elected his successor on October 7, 2011.
