When a diocese becomes self-supporting, it is usually granted a ruling bishop who becomes a member of the Holy Synod.
The equivalent title in some Orthodox jurisdictions is [[Exarch]]. The equivalent title in the Roman Catholic Church is Vicar Apostolic.
