Little is known of Archbishop Vassian's life. Before his assignment to the see of Kazan, he was abbot at the Ipatiev Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Kostroma from 1558/1559 to 1566 and an archimandrite at the Moscow New Savior Monastery from 1571. In 1572, Archim. Vassian participated in a council that approved, with conditions, the marriage of Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) to Anna Koltovskaya, his fourth.
On February 14, 1575, Archim. Vassian was consecrated the Archbishop of Kazan, a tenure that lasted only four months. He died on May 21, 1575 and was buried at the north wall of Kazan's Annunciation Cathedral.
