Archangel Michael of Mantamados, island of Lesvos

This is one of four miraculous icons of the Archangel Michael in the Dodecanesse of Greece.

This miraculous icon, is inside the church of the Taxiarchs at the village of Mantamados, Mytilene, Lesvos. According to legend, in the Byzantine years, during a Saracen attack, the pirates killed all the monks on the island except one. This monk was saved by the Taxiarch Michael who made the only permitted statue in the Orthodox Church of the Archangel out of clay and the blood of the dead monks.
