All-Merciful Savior Monastery is a monastic community of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia and is the only male monastery in Washington state. It was established in 1986 by Archimandrite Dmitri in California, and in 1988, under the leadership of Hieromonk Tryphon, moved to Vashon Island, Washington. The monastery was formerly part of the OCA, but is now under the omophorion of Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco.
In 1997Starting in 1995, islanders Georgia and John Ratzenberger ("Cliff" from the US television series "Cheers") donated began donating land to the monastery. In 1999, to protect the solitude of the monastery, the benefactors enabled the brotherhood to purchase an adjacent piece of land and save it from development. Along with the an adjacent, publicly-owned 40 acre watershed, the monastery is quietly secluded in the forests of Maury Island.
In 1997 (?), after the Brotherhood began selling coffee, CEO Howard Shultz of Starbucks Corporation sued for trademark violation of their coffee "Christmas Blend," as the brotherhood distributed a product with the same name. The brotherhood won the court case and also gained so much fame from the case to raise funds to begin building their katholikon, the Chapel of the Protection of the Holy Theotokos. The story is featured in the film This Land.
