The future Metropolitan Alexios was born Panayiotis Leontaritis in Athens, Greece in 1964. He studied with the Philosophy and Theological Faculty of the University of Athens and Thessaloniki, graduating with a degree. He served as an officer in the Greek army from 1985 to 1987. In 1995 and 1996, he continued with his post-graduate studies at Chambessy in Geneva, Switzerland.
He was [[ordination|ordained]] a [[deacon]] by His Eminence Alexios of Trikkis and Stagon in 1987, and ordained to the [[priest]]hood in 1990. While serving the [[Metropolis]] of Stagon, Fr. Alexios served as the Metropolitan Secretary for three years, followed by ten years as [[Chancellor]]. In addition, he taught Literature.
In 1999, Fr. Alexios transferred to the [[Church of Alexandria]], where on [[November 23]], 1999, he was elected [[Bishop]] of Nitria by the [[Holy Synod]]. In Alexandria, he was [[consecration of a bishop|consecrated]] on [[November 29]], 1999 by Patriarch [[Petros VII (Papapetrou) of Alexandria|Petros VII]] in the Patriarchal Church of [[Sabbas the Sanctified |St Savvas]] the Sanctified and was appointed a Patriarchal [[Vicar]] in Cairo. On [[October 27]], 2004, Bp. Alexios was elected[Metropolitan of Carthage, and enthroned by His Beatitude, Patriarch [[Theodoros II (Choreftakis) of Alexandria|Theodoros II]] on [[November 28]], 2004.
