The first Russian Orthodox churches in New Zealand were established in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in the 1950s by Mitred Archpriest Alexey Godyaew (February 8, 1900–March 19, 1991).

Fr Alexey travelled extensively pastoring the parishes until his retirement.
