It is distinguished from the ''Abbana'' which begins the [[Lord's Prayer]], which has the same literal meaning but is used to refer only to God.  ''Abouna'' is a term used to address [[priest]]s.

''Abouna'' is also the title for the [[patriarch]] of the [[Oriental Orthodox]] [[Church of Ethiopia]].  The first abouna of the Ethiopian church was St. [[Frumentius of Axum]].
