Since this icon is only found in Russia and originated in southwestern Russia (near Roman Catholic Poland), it is likely an Orthodox adaptation of the Roman Catholic imagery contained in the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Sorrows Our Lady of Sorrows]].
