Prior to his becoming bishop of San Francisco, his predecessor, as [[Locum tenens]], was Bishop [[Philaret (Ioannides) of Chicago|Philaret of Chicago]]. The depression of the early 1930s hit the St. Sophia community very hard, causing the community to declare bankruptcy and lose their church. As the parish could no longer support him as bishop, Bp. Kallistos moved his office to the larger Greek population in Chicago.
He continued to serve as Bishop of San Francisco until he died in november 1940<ref></ref>.
