Because St. Artemius was killed by lightning, people at first believed this was God's judgment upon him. In 1918, Soviets desecrated his relics and threw them into a well.
In 1648, by order of Tsar [[Alexis of Russia|Alexis Mikhailovich of Russia]] was founded the St. Artemius of Verkola monastery, and relics of the saint was moved into it.
