Life
Saint Andronik was born early in the fourteenth century in Rostov. Having entered a monastic life, he became a disciple of the venerable Sergius of Radonezh at the Holy Trinity Monastery north of Moscow. Andronik lived at the monastery for many years before he was called by Metropolitan Alexis of Moscow.
Metr. Alexis came to Holy Trinity to meet with St. Sergius concerning fulfilling his vow to build a monastery in Moscow after God had saved him from being shipwrecked during a storm on his journey from Constantinople back to Moscow. Wanting to establish a cenobitic monastery dedicated to Our Savior, Alexis asked that he wanted Sergius’ disciple Andronik to lead the construction effort and be the first igumen of the new monastery. With St. Sergius’ agreement, Andronik led the construction of the new monastery that took from 1358 to 1361. He, then, became the first abbot of the monastery that while dedicated to Christ also took on his name a well, becoming known as the Spaso-Andronikov Monastery.
