Varnava (Rosic) of Serbia

His Holiness Varnava (Rosić) ( Његова светост патријарх српски Варнава ) was Patriarch of Serbia from 1930-1937. Patriarch Varnava was also on of main figures in Concordate crysis and its victim.
He was bornn in Pljevlja August 29/September 11 1880, as Petar into family of Đorđe and Krsmana Rosić (Ђорђе и Крсмана Росић). He finished primary school in Pljevlja 1892, and Seminary in Prizren 1899. Same year he became a stipendist of Russian Synod. He continued his studies at St. Petersburg Theological Academy and he earned the title of "Candidate of Theology" 1905. He is tonsured in St. Petersburg April 30, 1905, by his Rector Bishop Sergije. He was given name Varnava. He is ordained deacon May 6, and presbyter June 6, same year. He returned in Contantinople and was apointed as Chaplan in Serbian Ambassy. He also was principle of Serbian School.
Holy Synod elected him March 18/31, 1910 for auxilary bishop to Metropolitan of Veles with title Bishop of Glavnica. He is consecrated April 10/23 on Lazarus Saturday, 1910 by metropolitans: Philaretos of Didomitice, Dorotheos of Sosgatople, Polycarp of Eleason, Sophronios of Pryconya and Anthim of Sarandeclesia in Constantinople Cathedral Shurch of Saint George.
Teritories of his Diocese wer conquered by Serbia on First Balcanic War (1912-1913). He was given of several dioceses. Young Bishop was organising Spiritual Courts, rebuilding churches, establishing schools. When World War One was Broken Bp. Varnava retreeted with Serbian Army in Greece threw Albania.
After war he was apointed administrator of all dioceses in Macedonia. He participated in reestablishing of Serbian Orthodox Church 1920. He is soon elected Metropolitan of Skoplje November 17/30 1920.
After death of Patriarch Dimitrije 1930, Electorial Assembly of Serbian Orthodox Church elected Metropolitan Varnava for new Patriarch April 12/25, on Lazarus Saturday, . He unified administrative sistem of Serbian Orthodox Church. He also started Building of Memorial Saint Sava's Temple in Belgrade. Patriarch Varnava built Patriarchal building wich servs as Administrative Center in Belgrade and Patriarchal Palace. He was planing to establish Academy for chanting.
Governmant of Milan Stojadinović 1937. wanted to signed concordate with Vatican. This treaty was giving enormous privilegies to Roman Catholic Church wich was actuly minority in Yugoslavia. Holy Synod strongly oposed this treaty anonced that Prime Minister all members of parlament who voted pro will be excluded from Church. Popular Assembly voted Concordate but Senat voted contra so Concordate was never realised. Patriarch who was strongly against concordate died under unclirified circumstances.
Patriarch Varnava died July 23, 1936. He is buried in small Church of Saint Sava. When Saint Sava Temple will be finished Patriarch Varnava will be buried there.
