Welcome to OrthodoxWiki!

Hello, Arbible, and welcome to OrthodoxWiki!

Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Please note that OrthodoxWiki is always in development, so not everything works quite right yet. You can help, though!

OrthodoxWiki is a community-edited encyclopedia of Orthodox Christianity. Articles are created and edited by our members, and so everything that we do here is subject to review and revision. The result is a true consensus product, with every interested editor contributing his own knowledge and writing skills. As such, when you feel that criticism of an article is warranted, we encourage you to join in and fix it! Don't worry about breaking anything or doing something wrong—the other editors here are happy to jump in and help you learn.

Recent image uploads

Thank you for your recent contributions. I've noticed that you uploaded multiple images pertaining to Pope Shenouda III. Those need to be tagged with Image licenses. Please do so that we know they're not potential copyright violations.

Additionally, some of them have names which are non-descriptive or not specific enough (e.g., 26defe3.jpg, P1010582.jpg, and With_Pope_John_Paul_II.gif). They'll need to be reuploaded with new names (along with tags). ——Fr. Andrew talk contribs (THINK!) 13:46, 7 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Re: Copyright discussion

Certainly you are forgiven. Please forgive me if I offended you in any way. It's easy for these sorts of things to become misunderstandings. ——Fr. Andrew talk contribs (THINK!) 17:22, 7 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Coptic Contributions

Just wanted to say that I'm very happy to have Coptic contributions to this site. We've tried to make our own bias and position very clear in OrthodoxWiki:Style_Manual#Neutrality_and_the_OrthodoxWiki_Bias. I remember fondly contacts with non-Chalcedonians at seminary, and the sense of closeness we had, and know people who have very good relations with Pope Shenouda. Fr. John

Saints and calendar dates

For the information you add regarding saints who are common to both the non-Chalcedonian and Chalcedonian churches, would you mind including the dates according to the Chalcedonian calendar, as well? I don't think most of us who aren't non-Chalcedonians are going to know what the equivalent date on our own calendar will be for the Coptic calendar or other Oriental Orthodox calendars. ——Fr. Andrew talk contribs (THINK!) 09:46, 19 Aug 2005 (EDT)

I got your note. Thanks. My concern is about Coptic months that aren't the same as the Gregorian/Julian ones, e.g., Hathor, which doesn't seem to correspond directly to any Gregorian/Julian month. Do you understand what I mean? ——Fr. Andrew talk contribs (THINK!) 13:53, 19 Aug 2005 (EDT)

It happened on 29 August (23 Misra)

Is there a reason this is on my talk page? There are no questions or comments directed towards me. If you need to add an event to the calendar commemorations, there is information on the style page for the calendar. If you want to practice with the wiki, there is the sandbox. I'm a little confused. —magda (talk) 17:50, 29 Aug 2005 (EDT)

I would appreciate a response regarding this information. My talk page is not meant to be an article, but to communicate with me, and I do not understand whatever message you are attempting to relay. —magda (talk) 21:26, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Apologies for the confusion. There is no hidden message. I agree with you this is not the correct place for this article. Arbible
If you are simply looking for a place to add content for your own reference, you can create your own sandbox (or other subpages) similar to those of Rdr. Andrew and Pistevo. Then you can simply refer to those pages via a link when you want to relay that information to someone. If you need to delete these subpages, just let an admin know and we will be happy to help. Multiple Accounts

Hi there - I just wanted to note that I agree with Rdr. Andrew. Also, I'm not sure why you have multiple accounts. Please choose which one you want to keep and I'll delete the other! I don't think we have an explicit policy on this yet, though it will be coming soon! Thanks, Fr. John, cc:StAnonius
Thank you, Father. Please do whatever you find good in your eyes. I trust your judgement. Also, please accept the following two entries for OrthodoxWiki's Collection of Texts:

1: The Collection Of Safey The Son Of The Honey Maker Church and Civil Laws Based on Coptic Orthodox Norms and Traditions (13th Century: 1245 AD) http://www.zeitun-eg.org/ASSAL_AL.pdf

2: The Lamp that Lights the Darkness - In Clarifying the Service By Ibn-Kabar, Coptic Priest of the Hanging Church (14th Century: 1296-1332 AD) http://www.zeitun-eg.org/Ibn_Kabar.PDF

Regarding modern heresies, sects and deviations from Orthodox faith, I think these are important entries in an encyclopedia of this kind (cf. Catholic Encyclopedia's coverage of these topics, e.g., http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01166a.htm , http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10570c.htm , http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15674a.htm , etc.). They are also important topics in the world we are living in, and represent important "challenges" facing the Church, e.g., http://english.pravda.ru/main/2002/09/30/37489.html

P.S. I noticed that the domains http://copticwiki.org/ and http://catholicwiki.org/ have been registered.

God Bless.
I'll block stantonius then, since you're using arbible. Please go ahead and add the articles as you see fit, making sure to put them in the right place and that it's ok to use them in terms of Copyright. I agree that many of the articles you've begun are worth having on board, and that they're good things to get information out about. We don't need to be totally comprehensive, so we don't really need general articles. I think if there's only a few links for each entry, we should put them together on a general "Cults" or "Apologetics" page. But if we have a good article on how their doctrines and practices related to Orthodoxy, that would be even better.
I've lifted the link you gave for http://www.copticwiki.org, made an announcement on OrthodoxWiki:News and created an InterWiki link. Thanks for all your work.

Deletions

Hi Arbible,

I've deleted a number of the "cult" articles that only had a few links to the group or teaching. I've left ones, like Jehovah's Witnesses or Freemasonry that had atleast one Orthodox-related link. I hope these can either be expanded into articles or intergrated together into some general cults page. Generally speaking, I think it's better to put too much on one page and then have to break it apart rather than scattering a few links over lots of different pages.

All this said, I'm grateful for your work and your continuing interest in OrthodoxWiki. Fr. John

OrientalOrthodox

Please see my reply at Talk:Oriental_Orthodox. Best wishes, Fr. John

Of course brother!

No forgive me. I worded my additions to the article as if they were the only views that existed without taking into account any opposing views. Thankfuly Fr. John intervened. I think that the external links to the pro-union and anti-union case at the bottom of the article are enough to present both sides. Thank you for those additions.

You know, when I was converting to the faith, I was torn between the Oriental side and the Eastern side and I ended up chosing the Eastern side (as you can see), but only barely. I was *this* close becoming a member of a local Coptic church. I actually regualrly attend a Coptic youth Bible study and have even spoken there before. While I am there, I choose to steer away from the issue of christology.

In Christ, Julio

Looks good, Arbible. I suggest you make those separate pages in the Category:Contributed Articles category (if you can get appropriate permission to post them) and then link to those pages from the main 4th ec council page.
