How did you do the sidebar edit? I've been looking through the docs at meta.mediawiki and can't find anything on this (except hacking the php files). Thanks, Fr. John

Hey, thanks. That does help anyway -- I'd forgotten about that page ;-). Fr. John

Good morning Andrew

Thanks for cleaning up my spelling and some of the entries from last night. One question though - I noticed you made the Categories aplhabetical. My idea was to put the larger category "Ethics" first with the subcat "bioethics" second. Is this bad practice on Wikipedia? It makes more sense to me.

Thanks, Fr. John 10:14, 29 Jan 2005 (CST)

New Look

I like the new look on the main page. Very slick!

I wonder if there's any possible way to include another page without using templates. I don't think so, but that would work... I'll have to investigate this later. Fr. John 09:18, 3 Feb 2005 (CST)

Question on Images

I haven't tried yet, but I want to add some images. Do these have to be uploaded from a file on my computer, or can they be imported (provided they're in public domain) from another website? - Joffridus

Okay, now I'm even more confused than I was before. What if it's, say, a photo that was sent out as part of a news release? (I am thinking particularly of a photograph of the Archbishop of Canterbury with the Ecumenical Patriarch that was sent out by the Anglican Communion News Service.)
The best thing would be to write to ACN and ask permission for posting their photo with credit given, and include our URL. Generally speaking, it's considered rude to "hotlink" to photos on other sites since it eats up other folks precious bandwidth. Practically, this wouldn't really be a problem on a low-traffic site like this one, but nevertheless it's not best practice. (I can also make the pages load more slowly). Fr. John 11:36, 7 Feb 2005 (CST)

OCA Site

Should Bishop Seraphim (Sigrist) be added to the list of retired OCA bishops in the OCA entry? I ask because he is in the OCA and is a retired bishop, although he was bishop in Japan. - Joffridus

Good morning dear Reader!

Just wanted to let you know that I'm going to be out of town for the next four days so you won't be hearing much from me. I'll check in as soon as I get back! Fr. John

Lenten Triodion

Thanks for noticing my errors! I'm still rather new to all of this, and it can be difficult to find information at all, let alone accurate. Please change the descriptions. Otherwise, my husband--who works at the Department of Religious Education on campus--will look into their new publication The Triodion tomorrow afternoon and get back to me. Also, do you have any advice on getting him to sign up for an account? --magda 18:20, 22 Feb 2005 (CST)

Triodion Follow up

By the way, The Lenten Triodion translated by Bishop Kallistos and Mother Maria is not a complete translation of the Triodion. It includes only the core services -- some Saturdays, all Sundays, and Holy Week. There is a supplemental text that looks like it was published on a mimeograph machine (texts also translated by Bishop Kallistos and Mother Maria) containing all the services for every day of the pre-Lent, Lent, and Holy Week periods that are not included in the work cited above. It is available but hard to find. This source says they have it (follow the link and search on triodion).

Triodion Supplement

You are right: it is vital stuff. Last year I made it a point to read at least the canons for every day of Lent. It lends a beautiful continuity to the fast.DcnDavid 09:23, 23 Feb 2005 (CST)

Church Calendar Project

On January 19 and January 30 (at least), there are not only Feasts, but Events. How should this work in with the templates? --magda 15:42, 25 Feb 2005 (CST)

Categories

Rdr. Andrew and Fr. John -- can we add a category of "Monastics" to the "People" heading on the main page? I've added a (brief) article on Hieromonk Matthew (Blastares) and created a category of "Monastics" for him (I hope that is okay). He has not been glorified. I imagine there may be other monastics, not glorified, that might warrant an article or two. --DcnDavid 14:16, 26 Feb 2005 (CST)

Thank you for correcting another of my many mistakes and teaching me along the way. Would you mind adding a description to the Church Fathers Category page? I noticed that you added descriptions to some of the other categories (Hymnographers, Modern Writers, Asceticism) and I have found that quite helpful. Also, how do you link to these categories without making the page you're using a member? --magda 13:35, 27 Feb 2005 (CST)

Titles

It would be nice to have each title or commemoration redirect to the Saint commemoration page so that each could be explained by someone with that expertise. I haven't the slightest idea why some saints merit the titles of "Equal of the Apostles" or "righteous" or "God-bearing" or "venerable," and I am hoping someone will (ahem) explain them to me. The first time I saw "God-bearing" I thought it was a typo for "God-fearing." I see OrthodoxWiki as a long-term, long-standing project which could benefit from extensive cross-referencing. So in this regard, and as there is nothing (yet) against it in the Style Manual, I stand behind my links. Additionally, I would like some clarification in how the names in the Church Calendar entries should be listed: the "Saint commemoration" page way, or simply names, or based on a particular synaxarion? --magda 20:17, 26 Feb 2005 (CST)

Disambiguation pages

Reader Andrew, what do you think the best way is to start implementing these? I keep stumping myself on what and how to name pages; with so many saints, maybe there should be a "Basil" page, for instance, and all the Basil saints link back to that--would that linking be automatic? Is this at all a good idea or did the research for all the Fools-for-Christ, emphasis on the first part, get to me? --Tired magda 21:40, 28 Feb 2005 (CST)

Alphabeticization

Thanks for the cleanup. I was ordering according to the Greek alphabet. ;-0 --DcnDavid 08:54, 1 Mar 2005 (CST)

Category Deletion

Rdr. A: When I created the category Distance Education Programs I tried to find Distance Education in order to delete it, but it didn't show up in the Categories listing. Was I looking in the wrong place, or am I just blind? --DcnDavid 12:39, 1 Mar 2005 (CST)

Church of Romania article

Rdr. Andrew,

Sorry about not logging in earlier - I'd forgotten my password. I've sorted that out now, though. I've had a look through the Church of Romania article and made a few minor corrections and small additions. It looks pretty reasonable to me now, so I think you can use it as a featured article without worry. I've also addded a couple of brief articles on Romanian saints which I've linked to that article. I hope to improve them significantly over time, but I can't manage it at the moment as I'm fairly busy. I also hope to add articles on Putna, Voronet and Sucevita monasteries soon as well as one on St. John the New of Suceava. Thanks for the advice about the tildes, too. James

Book Sources

Is there a way to link to the Book Sources page directly (i.e. other than inserting an ISBN). On the Domestic Church article, under the sub-heading of "Education in the Domestic Church" I would like to link there instead of the marketplace. -- Joffridus

Redirects

Thanks for picking up the arch-, proto-, hiero-deacon redirects. I meant to do that when I deleted the internal links.DcnDavid 12:28, 23 Mar 2005 (CST)

Yellow Subs

HA! The beauty of editing in a MS Word doc (with its auto correct feature) and cutting and pasting. Thanks for the catch.DcnDavid 21:06, 23 Mar 2005 (CST)

Templates

Hello! I'm wondering if there's a list of templates anywhere on the board - maybe you know about something I don't? I've gotten rather lost in figuring out which template to use when. If there is no special page, would you mind putting a list together at some point? (I think you have the most exact knowledge of this.) We've already got a link to OrthodoxWiki:Templates from the Community portal. Thanks! Fr. John

Thanks! Check out the new stats at OrthodoxWiki:Buzz when you get a chance. More referrers coming soon... Fr. John

Opinion Pieces

Hi dear Reader,

I remember reading somewhere in a talk page recently that you were thinking of posting some opinion pieces. I'm not sure where it was or if I responded, but since I'm thinking about it now I wanted to say please do feel free to post these kinds of things on your personal page. You can even create a whole subsite like this, moving down the directory tree like this: User:ASDamick/personal essays or even just /essays (from your user page). Please feel free to make ample use of this if you'd like. Fr. John 23:42, 6 Apr 2005 (EDT)

Archbishop Iakovos

HC/HC named their library after him, but I'm not sure where that should go in the article. Additionally, there are many useful pictures and history from that link. Here is a cover from Life magazine which is mentioned in the article, and a portrait from the library. --magda 10:45, 12 Apr 2005 (EDT)

I sent you an e-mail...

...at the address on your St John Chrysostom site. I was wondering if you got it. My email is Photios@bellsouth.net

Yes, I got it and am replying. I'm in my final week of class here at seminary and have had many projects to work on. --Rdr. Andrew 06:19, 20 Apr 2005 (CDT)

Re: Ahem

-)>+ I wouldn't reckon it a total waste of time - like child's place, of course it serves some function. You're honing your wiki skills for greater things! Fr. John

Images from OCA

I emailed the OCA and received permission to use them. I can forward you the emails from Fr. John Matusiak granting the use of them.

OCA Images

I in no way received permission to use all images. I specifically asked to use the icons of Sts. Joseph the Betrothed and James the Just. I'm sure that such permission may be given, but it was not given to me.

Help

St Lukes Priory is my login name. I am Antiochean WR Orthodox. I discovered and signed on the site today. I would like to edite/update material related to the Antiochean Western Rite Vicariate under such headings as Vestments-Western, Service books etc etc. These would obviously be more than minor edits and I am not sure on what to do after making changes. Do I need permission etc etc. Please advise me via email Thanks Dale Crakes

Another Images Question

Rdr. Andrew, I've noticed a difference in the way orthodoxwiki and wikipedia handle images, and I was hoping to (help) figure out how to get the frame-and-caption to work on an image when it is smaller or thumbnailed. Here is the wikipedia page illustrating that it does work there (specifically the last paragraph of that section). Perhaps you have an idea of how to persuade the orthodoxwiki site to cooperate? (Or maybe this is simply an issue unique to me, though it occurs both at work and at home.) I was trying to get it to work for the Isidore of Chios page, although it would be nice to have it working for the daily commemorations on the front page, too. Humbly yours, magda 10:11, 14 May 2005 (CDT)

Well, I sort of compromised on the Isidore of Chios page. I'd like to be able to both specify a size and have the caption. Where the size is specified, even though there's a caption in the image square brackets, the caption does not appear. --magda 22:40, 14 May 2005 (CDT)

I didn't realize "thumb" and the pixel specification were to be used in conjunction in order to make the caption appear. Thanks for your help in understanding that! On the Help wanted page, for the Church calendar, the image tag includes "100px," but neither "frame" nor "thumb." When creating the daily templates, trying to get the caption to appear using those two attributes, the size and alignment of the image make unintended changes. For example: for the Template:May_14 page, adding "thumb" before "100px" adds the caption and the picture appears at the correct size, but the text is no longer in line with the picture; adding "frame" does not let the size of the image to be controlled; adding both "thumb" and "frame" gives the same result as simply adding "frame." Is there a particular order to be used, or another specification to make so that the caption will show up without effecting other changes? --magda 20:30, 15 May 2005 (CDT)

Featured

Just a reminder that the Ephrem the Syrian article only had about three days as the featured article before Pascha. I don't know whether it would be better to add this to the queue again, or just leave it. I did not add this article to the "Recently Featured" paragraph at the bottom of the page, and left it as the "Current article" on the related talk page. (I added the "current article" section because I thought that if the current featured article already had a link on the talk page, it would be easier to update the talk page.) I also did not add the "Featured Articles" category to the Pascha page.

I like the idea of having Resurrection-related articles for the next features. Did you have anything in particular in mind? The Pentecost article looks like it could use some work, too. --magda 11:46, 25 May 2005 (CDT)

I think it'd be just fine to give St. Ephrem a little more time in the sun. Some of the recent work (see below) would be good to feature as well. Fr. John

Recent Articles

Wow, nice work on the recent articles! The boxes are really cool. I've never seem things laid out that clearly. May God grant that your work helps in some small way to bring healing and understanding! Fr. John

ROCOR / OCA

Nikolai-do and Met. Sergius of Japan

Thank you, Rdr. Andrew, for cleaning up on the titled articles. I'll learn slowly how to do better!! Question: I have photograhs of Nikolai-do, original design and the rebuilt cathedral in the 1930s. These picture are from my father-in-law's records now in the hands of my wife. Also, I have a picture of the damaged cathedral after the earthquake. This I got from a friend in Japan. These are old but I don't know the copyright status of them. This also includes a number of pictures of Metropolitan Sergius. If you would like I could e-mail them to you for consideration for including them in the articles.
