The proper question is, "What was the significance of the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the man Jesus?" Though some aspects of the relationship between the Divine Logos or Second Person of the Trinity and the Holy Spirit or Third Person of the Trinity are surely beyond human apperception or understanding, we can surely affirm that that relationship does not change and has not changed in time or with the passage of time. With regard to the salvific mission of the Incarnate Logos, however, the Gospels testify to an event (in time) when the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus, which is -- in a figure long before used by the Prophets -- also described as his Anointing, or Christ-ening. Notwithstanding that He was destined to be the Messiah since before time began (and thus also since his Nativity after the Flesh, and also for the few moments since his Baptism by the Forerunner), He did not become the Messiah until this event occurred. The Jesus who was the One whom John expected then entered upon the fulfillment of His mission as Jesus the Christ, and so as the Son of God who was to be manifested to the nations. Views that are harshly condemned as heretical might better be criticized for confusing things which are properly eternal with things that involve coming-to-be in time.
